Students are graded on each and every subject they take, those grades, good or bad follow them for life in one way or another. So too are the schools they learn in, and this year is the first year those grades are being publicized by the Texas Education Agency.

This grading system is derived from the standardized testing scores that come out of each school. There are many arguments for and against this being the proper way to measure a school's success. I'm sure there are valid points on both sides, but we're not here to judge, only to inform.

Parents absolutely have the right to know how their child's school is performing in whatever rating system exists, and what is being done, if needed, to improve any situation.

The only thing that makes me scratch my head a little is the TEA is only issuing grades A, B, and C. If a school scores lower than that, which should be a D or F, they are issued a "Not Rated" score. Is that what the kids are getting these days? Just asking.

The good news is most schools in Bowie County are doing well or have improved.
