Arkansas Has 36 Different Kinds Of Snakes And 6 Can Kill You
The very word snake makes most people squirm. I have to admit that spiders don't scare me one bit, but snakes on the other hand give me the willies. Did you know that there are 36 different snakes out there in Arkansas, but 6 can actually kill you?
Arkansas is known as the natural state and that means we all spend a lot of time outdoors. But did you know there are 6 different kinds of snakes you may run across that are poisonous?
Cottonmouth
This snake is found in most of Arkansas. It has a very distinct white mouth they open when threatened. Cottonmouths are also known as Water Moccasins and can grow up to 3 feet in lenght.
Western Diamond Back Rattlesnake
This is actually known as Arkansas rarest snake. It can grow up to 6 feet long and the diamond patterns on its back and the rattler are sure signs you need to stay far far away from this snake.
Copperhead
These snakes have a distinct rust color and these snakes can be up to 3 feet in length. They also have an hourglass pattern along their back.
Timber Rattlesnake
These snakes are found all over Arkansas, in forests, and even in trees. They can get as big as five feet long. They do have a very distinct black tail.
Texas Coral Snake
This is one of the rarest snakes and is only found in southern Arkansas west of the Ouachita River. It is a small snake at only 2 feet in length and it is only about the diameter of a pencil.
Western Pygmy Rattlesnake
This small snake is known for its red stripe down its backbone and its black cross bands. It had a spearhead-shaped head. These snakes grow to be only 20 inches long. And did you know that you cannot kill snakes in Arkansas? Only if they are threatening you or your property. You can check out the story I did on this law a few weeks back.
