The fourth annual Texarkana suicide prevention walk is Saturday, Oct. 1, in Bobby Ferguson Park. This event is held in honor of Matthew Gaines as well as many others. The walk is free to participate in because the purpose of the walk is to raise awareness and prevent suicide.

Chances are, you or someone in your family knows what it is like to lose a loved one to suicide. Matthew Gaines had a family and a lot of friends, co-workers and people he knew. They all lost him at the same time, November 23, 2012. This event will help bring awareness to the community as well as help educate those who attend. Educational material will be available at the walk and a balloon release will be held in honor of those who have lost their battle and succumbed to suicide. You never know what a person is dealing with behind the front they may put forth. Attend this event and learn how to spot the signs of depression and help a friend in need.

If you have a friend or loved one that you have lost to suicide, take along a photo to pin on the memory wall at the event. Also, take balloons to participate in a balloon release.

Registration begins at 9AM and the walk will begin at 10AM, right after the balloon release. Visit the Annual Matthew Gaines Suicide Walk on Facebook for more details on the event. If you need more information about suicide prevention, please visit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or call the hotline 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
