Did you know that feeding bread to the ducks and geese at the park is bad for them? As a kid, we always fed the ducks and geese at Spring Lake Park bread. The sunny weekend trips were always a highlight to get out and enjoy the weather and play in the park.

I go to the park with my two kids and we have fed the ducks and geese on occasion, but a recent post by the Texarkana Parks and Recreation Department let me know that feeding bread to the ducks and geese is actually harmful.

The park department says that bread pollutes the water, makes the ducks and geese ill, and even makes the water smell bad.

Do not feed the following things to the ducks and geese: bread, chips, crackers, popcorn and similar bread-type products and scraps. Do not feed any products that are spoiled or moldy; different types of mold can be fatal.

Here is a list of good things to feed the ducks and geese: Cracked corn, wheat, barley or similar grains, oats, rice, birdseed, grapes, frozen peas or corn, thawed out, of course, even chopped lettuce.
