This spring semester there are two History graduate courses being taught by affiliated faculty members with unique careers and historical insight.

Dr. Gene Mueller, who served as Professor of History from 2000 to 2010 at A&M University – Texarkana, will teach History of the American West (Wednesday 6:00 - 8:45p.m.). Mueller earned his Ph. D. in history at the University of Idaho where he began his work on the definitive biography of German Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel. He also researched local history leading to a history of Lewiston, Idaho and lifelong interest in the history of the American West. Now retired, Dr. Mueller continues to publish books and articles on the military history of the Second World War and the history of the American West.

The second course is being taught by Dr. Thomas Cutrer and is entitled Readings in the History of the American Civil War (Mondays 6:00-8:45p.m.). Dr. Cutrer is originally from Spring Creek, Louisiana, and after receiving his bachelor’s degree in History from LSU, he served as a combat intelligence officer for three years in the U.S. Air Force (including a tour in Vietnam). After returning to the U.S., he completed a Master’s degree in English and a PhD in American Civilization from the University of Texas, Austin. He is Professor Emeritus of History at Arizona State University and has published several books (and countless articles) on the U.S. Civil War, most recently Theater of a Separate War: The Civil War West of the Mississippi River (University of North Carolina Press, 2017).

“We are thrilled that Drs. Mueller and Cutrer have agreed to continue working to mentor and instruct students interested in the study of History,” said Dr. Craig Nakashian, Associate Professor of History and PLACE Program Coordinator at A&M-Texarkana. He also stated “To have two gentlemen of their experience and prestige offering specialized courses for us is an amazing opportunity for our students, and is a testament to the vibrancy of the program and the university at large.”
