‘Jurassic World 2’ Director J.A. Bayona Confirms ‘Jurassic World’ Trilogy

About a year ago, Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow went on a Jurassic Park-themed podcast and talked about Universal’s plans to make his film the first in a trilogy of movies about dinosaur-induced mayhem. And while nothing really seemed to indicate that the creative team had switched gears since then, today we did finally get confirmation that a Jurassic World trilogy is still the plan going forward.

In an interview with Latino Review, Jurassic World 2 director J.A. Bayona talked about the production process for his upcoming movie and how the film will fit into the overall plans for the franchise.

The whole Jurassic World is a trilogy that Colin Trevorrow has envisioned. We’re writing the second chapter, and it’s very interesting where he’s leading the story. I grew up watching Steven Spielberg movies and I love those movies and the legacy, so it’s a question of being truthful to the legacy and at the same time, bringing new stuff that people will appreciate. We are still six months ahead of shooting, and so far, so good. It’s very exciting right now.

No news is good news, so they say, so the fact that Bayona and his team are just smoothly running through the pre-production paces bodes well for the next film in the Jurassic World trilogy. It is interesting to see how Bayona talks about the real creative architect of the franchise. Back when Trevorrow was doing press for the first movie, he would speak openly and often about his relationship with producer Steven Spielberg and the influence the latter had on his film. Now that Bayona is directing, he seems to be speaking about Trevorrow in much the same way. The transformation of the property is complete.

If Trevorrow and his team are still dedicated to moving away from the traditional model of dinosaurs and themes parks, there are plenty of different directions a new movie could go. Then again, audiences would probably still make Jurassic World 2 a box office hit even if it is a rehash of Jurassic World’s rehash of Jurassic Park, so these changes seem more about satisfying Trevorrow’s vision for the franchise than keeping things safely in a box. Time will tell what the next entry in the franchise has in mind for the future of humans and dinosaurs.

Jurassic World 2 will bring back Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard and is set to hit theaters on June 22, 2018.
