It’s been nearly 17 years since Bryan Singer’s X-Men experiment ushered in a new era of superhero movies, and in that time, we’ve seen studios crank through actors with alarming frequency. We’ve seen three Spider-Men, a handful of Batmen, three Punishers across the big and small screens, and dozens of big-budget Marvel and DC movies break records at the box office. In the midst of all this chaos has been Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, the one actor-character combination that seemed immune to bad reviews and flagging box office numbers. And with Jackman set to take one final turn as Wolverine in Logan, the actor is taking a little time to stop and reflect on his impact in Hollywood.

In a recent profile in the New York Times (via Heroic Hollywood), Jackman opened up a little about his decision to step away from the character after Logan. While Jackman wouldn’t close the door entirely to an X-Men return  —  and frankly, he’s earned the right to hedge his bets a little after all these years  —  the actor did seem to be confident that Logan would be his last movie every step of the way:

When I had the script, I was like, ‘Yes.’ And when I was shooting the movie, yes. As I sit here today, yes.

Jackman also talked about his performances as Wolverine and what it would mean to leave the character behind. While many actors promote upcoming films by describing what they got right, here Jackman seemed satisfied that his work on Logan was the least wrong of his X-Men career:

(T)here’s been a gnawing turmoil that I hadn’t really nailed it, fully — either story or performance or whatever. Every film I’ve ever done, I’ve had that gnawing doubt. But I have it way less in this one.

And as for the future of the character? While 20th Century Fox will probably want to give Logan a bit of time to resonant with audiences, even now, there are undoubtedly conversations happening about which actor might strap on the plastic claws in Jackman’s wake. In the interview, Jackman claims to have made his peace with the prospect of another actor taking on the character of Wolverine, albeit a peace that comes with one major exception: if Daniel Day-Lewis were to play the character and bring home an Oscar, then Jackman “might have a little problem.” One thing’s for certain: whoever does step into the role of Wolverine will have some pretty big shoes to fill.

Here’s the full plot synopsis for Logan:

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

The film will also star Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, and Dafne Keen and hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
