Food banks like Harvest Texarkana need more food donations during this time of year than the rest of the year. Of course, anything you donate is greatly appreciated by the food bank but, in particular, these are the items they need the most this time of year. Remember to donate items that you would eat yourself.

A chief marketing officer of a food bank in New York City said donations are more important than ever because of cuts to federal funding of food assistance programs. Also the donations should be healthy choice foods. According to Buzz Feed Life, here are the 10 things that food banks need the most during the holidays:

  1. Holiday foods. Like Stove Top stuffing, cranberry sauce, and canned yams.
  1. Canned vegetables. The low-sodium kind are best.
  1. Mixed nuts. They're kind of expensive, so not many people donate them.
  1. Pasta. The whole grain kind is best.
  1. Rice and beans.  And things like couscous and quinoa are good too.
  1. Juice boxes. They like to have them around for kids, especially the kind that are 100 percent juice.
  1. Canned tuna, canned chicken, and canned salmon.
  1. Cereal and oatmeal. So they can make something quick for breakfast.
  1. Canned soup.
  1. Cooking oil. Especially olive oil and canola oil.

If you want to donate to Harvest Texarkana go here. For every $1 you give, Harvest Texarkana can provide seven pounds of food to the hungry.
