$7.4 Million For Improvements to BIke/Hiking Trails in Bowie & Red River Counties
Well, how awesome is this? Improvements have been approved for the longest hiking, bicycle and horseback riding trail in Texas that extends into Bowie and Red River Counties.
It all stems from TxDot as they approved over $7.4 million for the projects that will make improvements to over a 27-mile area of the Northeast Texas Trail System (NETT).
According to the press release from TxDot;
The NETT links New Boston to Farmersville, east of Dallas, and spans 7 counties in rural east Texas. According to the NETT Coalition, once completed, the trail will be the longest hike/bike and equestrian trail in Texas, and the fourth-longest in the United States.
This federal funding comes from the Transportation Alternatives (TA) program, which enhances bicycle and pedestrian safety. The project will include building sidewalks, bike lanes, pedestrian bridges plus other safety features.
Specifically some of the areas the trail will be improved on according to the press release;
In Bowie County - a 10-foot wide unpaved aggregate path next to US 82 from SH 98 west of New Boston to FM 1840 near De Kalb.
By the city of Avery - the trail will then extend from the Bowie/Red River County line west to the city limits of Annona.
In Red River County- still adjacent to US 82 on the east side of Annona to the US 82/Business 82 intersection east of Clarksville.
Did you know you can camp on the trail too? You can find out more information at the Northeast Texas Trail Coalition website.
