The picture above is either from Warner Bros.’ new disaster movie Geostorm, or of theater owners around the country as they face a weekend full of disappointing new releases. Maybe it’s both. A thing can be two things.

The number one film in the country over the weekend was Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, which grossed an estimated $21.6 million in theaters. Meanwhile Geostorm, a massive $120 million would-be blockbuster, trailed in a distant second place with $13.3 million. There’s a disaster movie joke in here somewhere; you make it yourself. Here’s the full box office chart:

Boo 2!’s $21.6 million trails the original film’s opening weekend total by about $7 million. Still the film should earn about $50 million in the U.S., and it also got an A- from audiences on CinemaScore, suggesting it should do well in the coming weeks as audiences find it through word of mouth. According to Box Office Mojo, Perry’s films have grossed an incredible $838 million domestically to date.

That last paragraph is probably the closest Geostorm will ever get to the phrase “incredible $838 million domestically to date.” Its $13 million opening won’t bring it very far in trying to recoup its reported $120 million budget; The movie has made about $50 million internationally so far, bringing its worldwide total to $62.9 million. Its CinemaScore was a not-great B-, but audiences were practically raving about it compared to another of the weekend’s big releases, which flopped even worse than GeostormThe Snowman, a chilly Norwegian thriller starring Michael Fassbender as a detective named Harry Hole. (I’m not making a joke about the movie’s crappiness; that’s his name in the movie.) CinemaScore audiences gave The Snowman a D, and the movie made just $3.4 million in its opening weekend. It opened in eighth place on the box office chart, behind It in its seventh weekend in theaters. I don’t think we’ll be seeing more Harry Hole movies anytime soon.

Third place on the box office chart belonged to Happy Death Day, the Groundhog Day-ish horror film, which dropped a hefty 64 percent from last weekend to gross just $9.3 million. In fourth place was Blade Runner 2049, which dipped 53 percent; it’s now made about $74 million in U.S. theaters, with another $120 million worldwide. Rounding out the top five was the final big Hollywood release of the weekend, the firefighter drama Only the Brave. That movie grossed just $6 million, but those that did see it loved it; it got an A from CinemaScore. Let’s see how it does in theaters next weekend.

The best per-screen average belonged to The Killing of a Sacred Deer, the latest ultra-dark comedy from The Lobster director Yorgos Lanthimos. Thanks to a cast that includes Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, Sacred Deer averaged $28,646 on four U.S. screens, for a weekend total of $114,585 for distributor A24. The Jane Goodall documentary Jane was in second place with $18,571 on each of its three screens, followed by Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck, with an average of $17,191 on four screens.
