The countdown is on for Halloween and there's nothing like inviting some friends over for some tasty treats and watching a scary movie. Of course, everyone's definition of what is considered scary or not will vary. But to put it into perspective, you can't go wrong on watching some classics.

Here are a few of my personal favorites.

1. The Town That Dreaded Sundown

This true fact based film released in 1976 has become a cult classic. Based on the notorious unidentified serial killer named the Phantom Killer who stalked the streets of Texarkana in 1946 wearing a hooded mask. The movie was filmed in Texarkana that used a lot of local people in the making of this slasher film. I had the opportunity to be in this movie during the prom scene and in the beginning of the narration.

2. The Shining

Based on a Stephen King novel this classic 1980 film is unforgettable with some haunting scenes of kids in the hallway, a creepy hotel, and a man driven into madness because of this place. And of course, Jack Nicholson's classic line "Here's, Johnny."

3. Poltergeist

After watching this movie you never looked at your TV the same without hearing the words "They're here."

4. Halloween

What would Halloween be without watching this classic 1978 movie about a knife-wielding serial killer with a ghostly mask (molded from William Shatner's face). And the music alone was pretty creepy.

5. Ghostbusters

The original 1984 Ghostbusters movie ranked as one of the best movies of all time. It's about three paranormal psychologists who start their own ghost busting business. Who could forget the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.  Who you gonna call?

6. Carrie

This original movie from 1976 about a teenager with telekinesis abilities who uses her new found supernatural powers to get even with some high school pranksters in the ultimate prom scene of all time.

7. Nightmare on Elm Street

Turn off the lights but beware -- don't go to sleep, you could get attacked by the hideous Freddy Krueger with those razor sharped claws. He's what nightmares are all about.

8. Hocus Pocus

This is a movie the whole family can watch together because it has everything, comedy, scares, and fun. Three witches who are trying to hold on to their immortality makes for one hilarious adventure.

9. Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock's all-time 1960 classic about a deranged killer, Norman Bates, who has some serious mommy issues. The infamous shower scene has made many people never want to take a shower again.

10. Night of The Living Dead

Thanks to this cult classic, that was released in 1968 about zombies who come back from the dead to kill its victims, it started the whole zombie craze we have today. I remember seeing this movie at the 67 Drive-In. Do you remember?

Now I know some are probably thinking how about The Exorcist? I still will not watch this movie today. I saw it when it first came out in 1973 and I was so terrified I couldn't sleep at night for months. There was just something about this movie that was just pure evil.

What is your favorite scary movie you like to watch at Halloween?
