Recycling in Texarkana

A lot of the time, I do not pay much attention to recycling. I throw paper and plastic in one garbage can and the remaining trash in the other. I do not put as much focus and attention on recycling as I should.

What exactly can and can’t I recycle? Where in town can I recycle things? Should I just keep the recyclable items and try and reuse them? These are a few of the questions that go through my head when I think about recycling.

Ethan Estess, an artist in San Francisco, spent four months building sculptures using only garbage he found in San Francisco. I do not have much artistic talent to begin with, but definitely couldn’t turn garbage into art. Take a look at this video showing his journey with his artwork.

After watching that I began to ask myself even more questions about recycling in our area. What should you do with items you can recycle?

The first thing that popped into my head was using recyclable items for crafts and storage. As I am preparing to move into my first house, I am thinking of all the cute things I could make out of glass jars to use for storage. Old dishes and bottles could easily be turned into cute decorations.

Reusing things is an easy and affordable way to recycle! It has the joy of getting brand new stuff, but not spending as much money.

If you do not plan on reusing items, you can take them to a recycling center in Texarkana. Click here for a list of recycling centers in the Texarkana area.

Waste Management will collect your recyclables if they are placed in the green recycling cart with the yellow lid. For more information on how to get a recycling cart contact (903) 794-4111.

They will collect:

  • Aluminum and tin cans (empty and rinsed)
  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • All plastic jugs and bottles (for safety reasons, please remove caps)

They will not collect:

  • Glass
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic Bags
  • Light Bulbs
  • Sharp Metal
  • Hazardous or medical waste

I think Texarkana is doing a great job with recycling efforts and helping the area to become aware of the environment. I will certainly begin to pay more attention to what I recycle.
