One Direction may be one of the hottest groups on the planet, but band member Liam Payne still had to ask a girl out 22 times before she said yes.  She dumped him the next day.

“It’s a terrible story,” Liam told Good Morning America correspondent Cameron Mathison, who caught up with the band members on Saturday outside a bookstore in Skokie, IL.  The five were there signing copies of their new book, Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction. The book gives an inside look at the British boy band's lives, including how they feel about leaving their families behind when on tour.

Zayn Malik admitted his mother gets a bit upset every time he has to go away to perform.  “All of our moms get a little emotional,” he told Mathison. “You know, we’re still their little boys...but I guess there’s worse circumstances we could be out here for.”

One fan-submitted question asked if Zayn would ever move to the U.S.  He replied, "You know what? Actually I love the U.S., but I guess I’d miss my family too much… so probably not. I’ve got to stay true to the U.K.”

One Direction -- Liam, Zayn, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson -- also dished on each other during the interview.  “Liam’s actually broken his toe and nobody knows,” Louis revealed. Liam said he broke the toe “about a week ago,” adding, "I dropped a MacBook Pro on it, which is not very exciting story at all.”

Also, Zayn “acts like a bit of a...bad boy. But he’s actually a big softie,” Louis said.

One Direction's North American tour continues in San Diego, California, on June 8.
