Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario and legendary game designer and producer at Nintendo, has confirmed that the Big N is hard at work on new hardware.

An article on GameSpot talks about Miyamoto's statements regarding the formative stages of new hardware. Apparently, Nintendo is hard at work on the preliminary stages of more than one console.

Miyamoto spoke to the Associated Press, letting them know that, while Nintendo is working on new software offerings for their current system, the Wii U, the company has "groups working on ideas for new hardware systems."

The consoles in question are still in the formative stages of design, so there are no details regarding features or anything of the like, but a recent rumor concerning Nintendo's interest in Sharp's free-form LCD screens might provide a hint about what we'll see in future hardware. It's said that Nintendo is interested in taking the unique display, which can be bent into whatever shape the designer desires, and putting a hole in the middle, so that it resembles a doughnut. As we've speculated, perhaps this hole could be meant to fit another device, so that Nintendo can go all Voltron with their hardware.

Miyamoto also spoke about the future of Nintendo mascot Mario and how future consoles could mean big changes for the beloved plumber. Miyamoto said, "Since we first created Mario, people have compared him to Mickey Mouse. I've always said Mickey Mouse evolved with each evolution in animation. You saw Mickey Mouse each step of the way. From early on, I wanted Mario to be that character in the digital world, so that with each digital evolution, he was there to usher in the next era. I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system, you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game."

Who knows? Perhaps that hole in the screen might be for a pipe in which you can drop your Mario amiibo? We kid, but hey... it could happen. We'll keep you updated on the future of Nintendo's hardware lineup as more information is released. Until then, keep dreaming about Voltron-like Nintendo products with us.
