The R&B community is mourning the loss of Bahamian singer Johnny Kemp. The crooner, best known for his 1988 hit “Just Got Paid,” died on Thursday (April 17). He was 55 years old.

Circumstances surrounding his death remain a mystery at this time. However, according to the Jamaica Observer, Kemp's body was found face down on a beach in Montego Bay, St. James in Jamaica. Police believe he fell and hit his head on the rocks.

According to the Root, Kemp was scheduled to perform for the Tom Joyner Foundation Fantastic Voyage Cruise during the next few days. Reach Media, the company responsible for the Tom Joyner Foundation Fantastic Voyage, has issued the following statement:

“We have received confirmation that Johnny Kemp has passed away. We do not have any other details. We can confirm he was not on the ship for the Tom Joyner Foundation Fantastic Voyage Cruise.”

Kemp started his singing career as a performer in the Bahamas when he was 13 years old. In 1979, he moved to New York where he sang with a local band called Kinky Fox.

After performing for nearly 10 years, Kemp scored his first Billboard No. 1 hit with "Just Got Paid," from his 1988 debut album, Secrets of Flying. Produced by Teddy Riley, the song lives on as the ultimate after-work, payday anthem, especially on a Friday night.

Kemp's other Billboard Hot 100 hit came in 1989 with the song "Birthday Suit," which is from from the Sing movie soundtrack.

He is survived by his wife, Deidre, his two sons, his family, friends and fans. We send our heartfelt condolences to Kemp's family. May he rest in peace.
