What year model is the car you drive?

When it comes to my 2011 Jeep, I’m pretty much below average with the majority of drivers across the nation. As the average age of vehicles has been steadily climbing over the past few years. The time we keep our cars has gone up as well.  According to a new report, the average age of cars and trucks on the road is 11.5 years old.

According to a new report from IHS:

"The combined average age of all light vehicles on the road in the U.S. remained steady at 11.4 years, based on a snapshot of vehicles in operation taken Jan. 1 of this year.”

It seems we’re holding on to our vehicles a bit longer because they’re more reliable over all. I think a big contributor is the fact that the average price of a new car today is $33,560 and that is way too expensive for most people to afford, so we are keeping our cars longer.

Alternatively though, a lot of cars on the road are not equipped with the latest safety features or integration features that are offered by newer vehicles. This year marks the first year since this type of data has been published that the average age of both cars and light trucks are the same. Cars usually have a lower average age than trucks, but because reliability has improved so has the age of the average car.
