A big congratulations as these nursing students at The University of Arkansas at Hope-Texarkana from the Licensed Practical Nursing Program will be attending their special nurse pinning ceremony tonight Thursday, December 9, at 6PM in the Hempstead Hall Theater in Hope Arkansas.

This ceremony is their official induction in the brotherhood and sisterhood of nurses. This ceremony goes back a very, very long time. According to the press release:

The history of this rite of passage can be traced all the way back to the Crusades of the 12th century. During this time, the Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John the Baptist tended to injured and infirm Crusaders. When new monks were initiated into the order, they vowed to serve these sick soldiers in a ceremony where each monk was given a Maltese cross, the first badges given to those who nurse.

Florence Nightingale was also awarded the Red Cross of St. George for her efforts in tending to the injured in the Crimean War. Then she herself awarded the pins to her best graduates. The pinning of new graduates became an American tradition by 1916.
