This Saturday is the Texarkana "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive.

Our local mail carriers will collect bags of canned good and nonperishable food to help the underprivileged in the Texarkana area. Simply place a bag of food next to your mailbox or inside your mailbox before the mail runs and it will be picked up. This food drive benefits Harvest Texarkana, Domestic Violence Prevention, Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter, The Salvation Army and The Friendship Center.
Donate items like canned meats, fish, soup, vegetables, bottled juice, pasta, cereal and rice -- items that do not require refrigeration. Please do not include items that have expired or any items are in glass containers.

If you did not receive a donation bag, food donation items can still be left at your mailbox before Saturday's pick up time. If it is raining please use plastic bags like the ones you get at the grocery store.

How You Can Help:

1. Place non-perishable food products in a bag.

2. Leave at your mailbox on Saturday, May 9th.

3. Your letter carrier will pick up and deliver to local food banks or pantries.

"Stamp Out Hunger" day is the largest single day food drive in the nation.

With the extreme weather experienced this winter by much of the country, along with the economic struggles many Americans face, the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive never has been more important.

Letter carriers are honored to be able to help people in need,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “We see the needs in the communities we serve, and we believe it’s important to help meet those needs.”

Hunger affects about 49 million people around the country, including millions of children and senior citizens. And one in four households with a member currently serving in the U.S. military turns to a food bank for food assistance.

Pantry shelves filled up through winter-holiday generosity often are bare by late spring. And, with most school meal programs not available during summer months, millions of children must find alternate sources of nutrition.
