Riverdale's season 4 premiere, entitled "In Memorium," featured a tribute to the late Luke Perry, who played Fred Andrews on the show.

***SPOILERS AHEAD****

Fans had no idea how exactly the television show would write off such an important character. Within the first few minutes of the episode, fans discovered that the character of Fred died. Fred was driving home from upstate when he pulled over to help someone who's car stalled on the side of the road. He was struck by another vehicle, a hit and run.

Fred's son, Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa), was at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe when a phone called came in, once he answered the phone he fell to his knees. The episode flashed forward to Sheriff F.P. Jones giving details of Fred's death to Archie and his mother, Mary Andrews (played by Molly Ringwald).

Unlike the previous season of the television show, this episode did not feature any of the unrealistic scenarios the previous season brought. Instead, the episode solely focused on the characters' mourning Fred's death.

Perry played the character of Fred Andrews since the show's inception in 2017. Perry passed away from a stroke this past March.
