13 Rappers Share the Best Advice Their Mothers Gave Them

Hip-hop appreciates moms. The greatest MCs in history wouldn't have been able to share their lyrical gift with the world if it wasn't for their mothers. In the history of the game, rappers have waxed poetic time and time again about the women who raised them.

Kanye West's endearing 2005 track "Hey Mama," off Late Registration, finds him paying tribute to the special lady that brought him into this world. "Forrest Gump mama said, life is like a box of chocolates/My mama told me go to school, get your doctorate/Somethin' to fall back on, you could profit with/But still supported me when I did the opposite," he rhymes. Unfortunately, Donda West passed away in 2007, but the ode is an everlasting homage to her.

On Jay Z's 2001 song "Blueprint (Momma Loves Me)," featured on The Blueprint album, he details the many people who groomed him to be the man he is today. "Momma loved me, pop left me/Mickey fed me and he dressed me," he spits.

Then there's one of rap's most famous odes to a celebrated mom: 2Pac's "Dear Mama." This year, the track resonates even more due to the passing of the late rapper's mother, Afeni Shakur, this month. Hip-hop felt the loss when many of 'Pac's peers shared their sentiments about his mom's death on social media.
