Star Wars fans have never by shy about voicing their opinions, and plenty of Star Wars movies and shows and characters have been disliked over the years. I’m not sure any piece of Star Wars is as divisive, however, as Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Those who love it, love it. The movie appeared on year-end top ten lists. They called it the best Star Wars movie ever. Earlier this week, I saw an interview with Kelly Marie Tran where a fan gave her a scrapbook of her character because her role was so meaningful to her.

Those who do not love The Last Jedi, though, really do not love it. The complaints range from the rational to the irrational, and those who take issue with some elements of the film even include Star Wars star John Boyega, who plays Finn in the movie. In an interview with Hypebeast promoting Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Boyega says that while he liked The Force Awakens, he felt “iffy” about “a lot of the choices” in The Last Jedi. Here’s his exact quote:

The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid, The Last Jedi if I'm being honest I'd say that was feeling a bit iffy for me. “I didn't necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that's something that spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated.

The man is entitled to his opinion. He was there on set. He knows what happened. As a viewer, I liked The Last Jedi — although I probably would concede that his scenes on the casino planet with Rose were probably among the weaker elements of the picture. So perhaps I can agree with him that Finn’s part in The Force Awakens was better than his part in The Last Jedi, while still digging the movie as a whole. We’ll see how Finn fares in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker when it opens in theaters on December 20.
