For days and days, Marvel has been teasing some kind of Spider-Man project with a series of countdown images. When the first one said “4” people assumed it was a Spider-Man/Fantastic Four team-up. In fact, the numbers were a reference to the countdown at the start of a reel of film — because the project getting announced was a new comic book written by filmmaker and TV creator J.J. Abrams, who’s making a Spidey comic with his 20-year-old son Henry.

Today, Marvel released this video announcing the series, featuring the two Abramses:

In an interview with the The New York Times, here is how the series is described:

They are introducing a new villain, Cadaverous, who will cause problems for Spider-Man, his alter-ego, Peter Parker, and his beloved Mary Jane Watson, in a five-part series arriving in September. The Abramses are writing, and the comic will be drawn by Sara Pichelli and colored by Dave Stewart.

Pichelli is the co-creator of Miles Morales, who went on to become the subject of last year’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. So you’re getting the best of the best on the art side of things. This is Abrams’ first foray into the world of superhero comics, but he’s a prolific writer of film and television so the script side should be pretty solid as well. Sounds like one of Marvel’s most intriguing series in a long time.
