The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced that work will soon begin in November on a significant project to widen US 82 from Interstate 30 in New Boston up to DeKalb and US 259 in Bowie County. The project, awarded in August, aims to enhance safety, mobility, and regional connectivity.

The plan includes expanding US 82 into a five-lane road, featuring a continuous center left-turn lane. The work will stretch from 0.1 mile west of US 259 to 0.4 mile south of Interstate 30. "Throughout construction, at least one lane of travel in each direction will be open to motorists," assured Tommy Bruce, Texarkana Area Engineer.

In addition to the widening efforts, the project will involve the realignment and reconstruction of entrance and exit ramps on Interstate 30 and US 259.

"The overall goal of this project is to improve safety, mobility, and regional connectivity," said Katie Martin, Director of Transportation Planning and Development. "These improvements will accommodate future traffic volumes along the US 82 corridor."

The project will also focus on pedestrian and bicyclist accommodations. Sidewalks will be added within De Kalb's city limits, and the Northeast Texas Trail System will be relocated and upgraded along US 82 from US 259 to County Road 4105 in Malta.

"The existing trail will be moved about 25 feet to the south and will feature a 10-foot-wide improved surface with added safety measures," Bruce explained.

Work is slated to begin in November and is expected to be completed by 2028. Drake Companies LLC of Paris secured the contract with a bid of $114.5 million.
