Texas Home Security Footage Goes Viral After Shocking Snake Encounter

I've said it before, I'll say it again, I don't like snakes. Recently, a Texas owner had their worst nightmare come true when they had a close encounter with an unwanted guest.  Imagine getting an alert from your Ring doorbell camera, and when you check to see who's at the front door, it turns out to be a rather large snake. Yikes!

Rat Snakes Shock Texas Home Owner

That's exactly what happened to a resident's home in Cypress, Texas, a Houston suburb, earlier this month. A resident told KHOU11 she received a notification indicating motion near her door, and when she checked the video, she couldn't believe what she was seeing: a huge rat snake slithering around the rails near her front door. Did you see the  "No Soliciting" sign in the background?

Rat snakes are fairly common in Texas, especially when the weather begins to get hot. The snakes are looking for warm, sunny spots to regulate their body temperature, but sometimes they need to cool off from the sweltering heat.

Are Rat Snakes in Texas Venomous?

I don't know about you, but I'm not the biggest fan of snakes. Especially the venomous kind that can send you the emergency room. Good news for us though, the common rat snakes are non-venomous, but if provoked, they can still bite. The best thing a person can do if they encounter a rat snake is to stay away from it, eventually, it will wander off.

How Big Are Rat Snakes?

Rat snakes can grow up to 72 inches in length and are known for their excellent climbing abilities. Their defense mechanism allows the snake to vibrate its tail and emit a foul musky smell or even hiss if threatened. The devil I tell you!

They're named the rat snake or chicken snake because they feed on rats, mice, chicken eggs, and other rodents. Young rat snakes are vulnerable to predators like hawks, foxes, and raccoons, their favorite meal of choice.

So, if you spot a rat snake at your door, best not open the door.
