Here is some great news for young students in Texarkana and all across the state of Texas.

The Texas A&M University System is expanding its program called the Texas Rural Education Collaborative, also known as TREC. Texas A&M University–Texarkana is one of three universities joining this program, along with East Texas A&M University and Texas A&M University–Victoria.

As part of this expansion, the LevelUp Texas initiative will begin reaching more communities. The program focuses on helping students in kindergarten through 8th grade, and their families, learn about college and career options early on.

Leaders say the goal is simple: give students a clear path forward before they reach high school.

Robert L. Albritton, chairman of the Board of Regents, said in a press release,

Across the Texas A&M University System, we take seriously our responsibility to serve every part of this state. This work is about access, opportunity, and building stronger communities across Texas.

LevelUp Texas started at Texas A&M University and is led by its Office for Youth Engagement. The program uses hands-on learning, family involvement, and early exposure to college campuses to help students connect their interests to future careers.

Now, through TREC, that work is growing. The program brings together universities, schools, and community partners to support students—especially in rural and underserved areas.

Glenn Hegar, Chancellor of The Texas A&M University System, said something that rings so true,

Students don’t suddenly decide their future in high school. That sense of possibility starts much earlier.

Work is already underway, with hiring and planning in progress. Leaders expect programs to begin rolling out in the coming months.
