Remember the cartoon "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" when Snoopy was lying down on top of his doghouse, and the huge Harvest moon looked bigger than his doghouse? Well, tonight's Strawberry Moon (Full Moon) will seem eerily the same. Whether you live in Texas, Arkansas, or the continental United States, get ready for a lunar spectacular night.

When To See The Strawberry Moon in Texarkana

Starting tonight, the moon will appear very bright when it rises above the southeastern horizon at sunset on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Then, on Wednesday, June 11, in the overnight hours, if you happen to be up at approximately 2:44 a.m. (Central), the full moon phase will reach its maximum brightness peak. According to Space.com, the lowest full moon will occur in nearly two decades. 2006 was the last time this happened, making it a spectacle you do not want to miss. This rare phenomenon is known as a major lunar standstill because the moon appears to stop changing direction during this time, even though it's still moving in orbit, according to the Griffith Observatory. The next major lunar standstill will not happen again until 2043.

The Strawberry Moon occurs close to the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, which is on June 20 this year. The moon rises and sets at more extreme positions on the horizon while riding high or low, depending on the time of year, according to EarthSky.org.

The moon always appears larger at moonrise, causing what is called a moon illusion, tricking your brain into thinking it looks larger than it is when it's close to the horizon. The strawberry moon will also appear near the center of the Milky Way, according to NASA.

The planet's atmosphere will play a big part in the color of the moon, giving it a yellow-orange hue, almost like the Harvest Moon. No, the moon will not look the color of a strawberry!

Why is it called a Strawberry Moon?

June's full moon, the Strawberry Moon, got its name from Native American tribes after the short fruit harvesting season and the peak strawberry season that occurs during this moon phase each year.

So get the Snoopy effect tonight when you look up at the night sky. No great pumpkin rising out of the pumpkin patch, it's just the Strawberry Moon!
