Texas Governor Announces Federal Assistance for Panhandle Fires
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) to help Texas respond to the 8 Ball Fire burning in the Panhandle.
The wildfire started in Armstrong County and spread into Donley County, threatening homes and critical infrastructure and prompting local evacuations.
Fire Burns 13,000 Acres Across Two Counties
As of Friday morning, the fire had burned an estimated 13,000 acres and was 55% contained. About 400 homes were evacuated, and more than 1,100 homes have been threatened. Some residents have returned home, but state and local crews remain actively engaged in suppression and containment efforts.

Abbott said the federal funding will help wildfire response teams continue working around the clock to manage and contain the fire. He thanked FEMA and emergency personnel for their swift action and dedication.
Federal Grant Covers 75% of Firefighting Costs
The grant makes Texas eligible for 75% federal reimbursement for eligible firefighting costs. FMAG funding is designed to help states manage fires that could become major disasters.
State Emergency Operations Center at Level II
The Texas State Emergency Operations Center remains at Level II (Escalated Response), with the Texas Division of Emergency Management coordinating resources statewide.
Wildfire updates, safety tips, and damage reporting tools are available through the TDEM Disaster Portal at disaster.texas.gov.
