Going The Distance For Love in Romance, Arkansas
Valentine's Day is special but in the small town of Romance, Arkansas it means so much more.
That's because every year at about this time of the year the U.S. Post office in Romance gets inundated with thousands of cards and letters from all over the world to be canceled and have the cards specially stamped from the town of Romance then sent on its merry way to a loved one.
Some folks prefer to drive to Romance which is located 45 miles from Little Rock in West Central Arkansas to get their card or letter personally stamped. The stamp changes every year but the love theme stays the same for those who want to go the extra mile in showing their love and affection to that special person in their life.
The U.S. Post Office in Romance is one of only a few post offices in the country that will do this sort of thing around Valentine's Day.
This has become so popular that letters have come from all over the world to the tiny post office to receive the special signature stamp that began in 1990. People as far away as Japan and Australia have sent their cards, letters, and even wedding invitations to Romance just to validate their relationship with a loved one.
In a world of social media, it would be so easy to send a text or email but sending a card or letter is just so much more thoughtful, and personal, plus it adds that special touch that anyone could appreciate. Yes, it may be a little old-fashioned but in this case, that's good.
With the popularity of this ordeal, people have traveled near and far to get married on the grounds next to the post office in a gazebo and Valentine's Day is normally their busiest for weddings.
If you are planning on sending a card or letter from Romance time is running out as this is their busiest time of the year.
