As many Americans venture outdoors to celebrate the 4th of July,  CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System in Texarkana is reminding families that fireworks, while a fun tradition on Independence Day, carry serious risks when not handled properly.

Injuries Related to 4th of July Fireworks

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an annual report found that there were 14,700 injuries and 11 deaths associated with fireworks in the U.S. in 2024. Most of the injuries were completely preventable if the person shooting the fireworks had taken the necessary precautions to avoid a mishap. Thirty-seven percent of all emergency room visits were related to fireworks burns.

Safety Rules When Using Fireworks

  • Always keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby when using fireworks.
  • Don't shoot fireworks while intoxicated; let someone sober handle them.
  • Launching fireworks, such as mortars, rockets, or multi-pack kits, should be placed on a stable, flat surface to prevent tipping or erratic movement.
  • Always keep a safe distance and use a barrier to protect yourself from potential misfires or debris.
  • Never try to relight or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
  • Find a Fireworks Show in the area where you can watch from a distance.
  • Check with local city ordinances on the legality of fireworks in the area.
  • Always shoot fireworks from an open field area away from homes and buildings.
  • Check to make they're are no burn bans in effect for the area.

Sparklers Aren't As Safe As You Think, Here's Why

Despite them being a popular fireworks, you may think they are safe for children, but if not handled properly, they could lead to an emergency room visit. Adults should always be present with their children when using sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to melt some metals.
