3 Local East Texas Districts To Benefit From Tech Ed Grants

Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Workforce Commission is awarding six Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants, totaling $1,392,953, to six schools in Northeast Texas, three are right here near the Texarkana area. These grants aim to enhance career and technical education programs by providing funds for the purchase and installation of equipment. This initiative will help train over 550 students for high-demand jobs such as welders, aircraft mechanics, and service technicians.

“As Texas continues to grow, it is essential that we invest in our students so they are equipped for the workforce of the future," said Governor Abbott. "These career training grants will help students in Northeast Texas gain the skills they need to pursue careers in high-demand fields across our great state."

The East Texas schools receiving JET grants are:

Hooks ISD: Awarded $183,030 to train 78 students in welding, cutting, soldering, and brazing, in partnership with Texarkana College.
Maud ISD: Granted $262,857 to train 80 students in the same fields, also in collaboration with Texarkana College.
Simms ISD: Received $122,672 to train 68 students in welding and related skills, partnering with Texarkana College.

The JET grants are funded by the Texas Legislature and are used by the TWC to support the development of CTE programs in public community colleges, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased with these funds must be used to train students for high-demand occupations.
