The Marvin Nichols Reservoir has been a sore idea in the minds of many in North East Texas. And now officials are fighting it tooth and nail too. The Commissioners of both Red River and Cass Counties recently passed resolutions opposing the Marvin Nichols Reservoir.

Not only are they opposing it they are wanting it removed from the Texas state water plan. There has been a growing number of people that are totally against this reservoir because of the impact on people in that area and also how much it would obviously alter the landscape.

Bill Ward, a member of the Preserve Northeast Texas steering committee said in a press release;

“These votes demonstrate the widespread opposition to Marvin Nichols throughout Northeast Texas. Those promoting the reservoir can use eminent domain to take tens of thousands of acres of family farms, ranches and timberland from Texas landowners. We are grateful for the excellent leadership of Red River and Cass County officials who are standing up for our community and our way of life. We urge every elected official in our region to show the same leadership.”

This reservoir of water is planned for the use of the Dallas Ft. Worth Area. In doing so they would flood 72,000 acres of land in North East Texas, making it one of the biggest land grabs of private land to the public in modern history. It would affect three counties: Red River, Titus, and Franklin.  According to the website Preserve Northeast Texas, almost half of that area is a rare type of land in Texas known as bottomland hardwood forests found only along rivers and streams.

Here's a look at what the resolution says that was signed

You can help preserve this area and not to mention landowners' acreage too by signing a petition at the  Preserve Northeast Texas website.
