Whatever Floats Your Boat Duct Tape Boat Races and 5k Race

The Whatever Floats Your Boat event is coming on Saturday, March 19, so now is the time to get your boats ready to float. There will also be a 5k race.

Get your team together now for this event. Study up and start your test runs now so you can have the best duct tape-cardboard boat ready to go. The boats must be made completely of cardboard and Duct tape. You can also get your support team together to run in the 5k race. Join in one or both events.

Use this time to design, construct and prepare to set sail on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Bobby Ferguson Park with your boat made completely of duct tape and cardboard. The festivities begin at 9am and end at 3pm. It will be a lot of fun to participate and even more fun to watch. Both events are free.

Construction Materials & Rules
• The ENTIRE boat must be built from cardboard, any material that can be recycled and duct tape ONLY. Duct tape may be used to reinforce seams. NO STYROFOAM, OLD BOAT MOTORS OR HULLS MAY BE USED
• Oars and paddles may be used but must be made of cardboard and duct tape
• Each boat must carry at least 2 people and all people must sit in the boat— no standing and no surfboard style boat
• No paint or varnish is allowed on the day of the event; all paint must be cured prior to boat launch
• Fastening material is to be Duct tape only
• Decorations are allowed and encouraged provided they are not used as structural or flotation elements.
• Crew costumes are encourages
• NO caulking compounds, two-part/mixed adhesives, glues or epoxy mixtures or coatings are allowed.
• NO electrical, gasoline, benzene, propane or other chemical or electrical propulsion systems are permitted.
• Each boat must carry a closed gallon plastic jug (or PFD) with 15’ rope tether firmly secured to the vessel. Guppy class (1 to 2 jugs), Dolphin class (2 to 3 jugs) & Whale class (4 to 5 jugs). Gallon jugs are to remain inside boat while racing, they are not to be used as flotation for the vessel. This is for use in locating and retrieving any sunken remains
• Judges decide on the interpretation of the rules.

Boat Classification & Awards
Youth Flight– 10-17 years old– 2 or 3 people only
Guppy– 2-3 people per boat
Dolphin– 4-7 people per boat
Whale– 8-10 people per boat
1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each category: Spirit Award, Most Original, Titanic Award.
