Grilling and going camping over the Memorial Day weekend is what most people think about first when the holiday approaches. The day is set aside to to show your respect for those who have given their lives for our country, for our personal freedom. You can enjoy your family traditions and show respect at the same time.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with having fun on a holiday weekend and certainly taking time out of your busy schedule to hang out with family and friends isn't something to feel guilty about, just be sure to take a moment to remember the true meaning of the day. You can do something as easy as flying a flag at half-staff until noon to show your support or pausing at 3PM for the "National Moment of Remembrance."

Here are some other ways to observe the holiday from the US Memorial Day website:

  • By visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.
  • By visiting memorials.
  • By flying the 'POW/MIA Flag' as well (Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act).
  • By renewing a pledge to aid the widows, widowers, and orphans of our fallen dead, and to aid the disabled veterans.

In Texarkana, a memorial service will be held on Monday, May 29, 2017 downtown in front of the Korean/Vietnam Memorial wall at 11:30AM. There will be a walk and service to honor, remember and commemorate those who lost their lives fighting for our country.
