North Heights Entrepreneurial Leadership Academy and Union DaVinci School are each being named National Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America.

At North Heights, an advanced curriculum plays an integral part of developing entrepreneurial leaders. “The diversity of instruction is endless,” said Principal Theresa Cowling. “Globally-minded learners are prepared in an atmosphere that encourages artistic development and helps students become innovators.”

Union creates a learning environment that provides each student with an education that promotes self-discipline, motivation and excellence in learning. Students at Union expand their imaginations while learning to communicate using the latest technology. Principal Thelma Forte’ said, “We have created a supportive, pioneering, and academically challenging learning environment that helps young minds reach their full potential.”

To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.

“We are extremely proud of our staff and students,” said Superintendent Dr. Becky Kesler. “These awards are symbolic of the teaching and learning that occur on our campuses each and every day. In all of our schools, you’ll find state-of-the-art technology, dedicated teachers and an award winning approach to education that’s unique to each school.”

Both principals will be recognized and will receive a National Magnet School of Distinction Merit Award on behalf of the their schools during an award ceremony held at Magnet Schools of America’s 34th National Conference hosted in Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Miami, Florida in May.
