Texas A&M-Texarkana will host renowned author David Owen April 9 at 7 p.m. at Eagle Hall during a lecture to discuss his book, "The Conundrum: How Scientific Innovation, Increased Efficiency, and Good Intentions Can Make Our Energy and Climate Problems Worse."

Free copies of the book will be available for the first 50 attendees and a book signing will follow the presentation. The lecture will be held at Texas A&M-Texarkana’s University Center in Eagle Hall.

“An enthusiastic wrangler of facts, Owen presents disconcerting statistics. Take the BP Gulf oil spill: 'The average flow rate from the BP wellhead was 55,000 barrels a day. . . Americans use that much every four minutes.’ He calls us out on our tendency to delude ourselves about easy solutions to complicated problems and declares that our failure to do what needs to be done to reduce fossil-fuel consumption is the result of reluctance, not ignorance. 'In truth, we already know enough, and we have for a long time. We just don’t like the answers. That’s the conundrum,’” says Donna Seaman, Booklist, 2/23/2012.

Owen has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1991. Before joining The New Yorker, he was a contributing editor at The Atlantic Monthly and, prior to that, a senior writer at Harper’s. He is also a contributing editor at Golf Digest. He is the author of more than a dozen books and has presented lectures and made appearances all over the world, including New York, Chicago, Ft. Worth, Canada, and Australia.
