Swim Alongside A Dolphin, Then Eat It [VIDEO]
Would you be able to swim with a playful dolphin then kill it to eat the meat?I know I wouldn't be able to kill such a docile and intelligent creature. Town officials in Taiji, Japan, however, have decided differently.
In five years, the people in Tajii plan to open a 'marine park' they might like to compare to Discovery Cove in Orlando, Fla. where tourists can swim with the dolphins, but this will be a vastly different experience.
Tajii serves as the annual slaughterhouse of thousands of cetaceans, as is documented in the Oscar-winning film The Cove. (Watch excerpts below.) But unlike Discovery Cove, the animals are slaughtered and eaten at the end of the day in the cafe.
Both dolphins and small whales are a source of tourism during dolphin hunting in the bay. As Phillip Hoare states in the Guardian newspaper, "The almost laughably perverse proposals of the Taiji town elders only go to show how tough it is to be a dolphin in the 21st century."
According to Outside Magazine, 1,277 dolphins were caught by fishermen in Tajii in 2012. In 2013 they will be licensed to catch 2,026.
