With today being the first day of spring and the temperature is going to be in the mid 80s I was curious when the Rotary Splash Pad at Spring Lake Park in Texarkana is going to open to give us some relief from this early heat.

Robbie Robertson of the Texarkana Parks and Recreation Department says,

The Splash pad will be open on May 25, but may open earlier if the weather shows us that it is going to heat up early.

The Splash Pad will stay open daily from 9AM until 7PM daily until end of October. It has additional shade ports and picnic tables this year.

The Splash Pad is a zero depth water playground built in collaboration between the Rotary Clubs of Texarkana and the City of Texarkana, Texas Parks and Recreation Department. The International Rotary Club, The Sunrise Rotary Club, the Oaklawn Rotary Club and the Wilbur Smith Rotary Club, along with corporate donors, have raised more than $300,000 to build the Rotary Splash Pad with the City of Texarkana, Texas donating the land and site preparation and every year.

The City of Texarkana pays for maintenance, insurance and the water for all the community to enjoy at no charge. Andi Darby from the Texarkana Rotary Club said more efforts to raise funds are in the works.

"The Rotary Clubs are still fundraising to add one more shadeports, along with more picnic tables, and to add a nice fence around the Splash Pad. The cost of the fence will be approximately $12,000 for materials, with the labor donated by Richardson Fence. Once the Splash Pad has the fencing, then it will be available to be rented for private parties from 7-9PM,"

One of the features that gets the most attention from the kids is the pelican that dumps water from overhead. Its beak fills up and when it gets full the beak opens and dumps water on the kids below as seen in the photo above.

If you get a chance this summer make sure to take the kids to the Splash Pad. There are  plenty of benches for you to sit on and the Splash Pad is a great break from the heat.
