There were so many great dogs at the shelter when I went to visit this week that I couldn't just pick one. There were two hounds that had been surrendered by their owner. There was a sweet German Shepherd that was surrendered after she had already been spayed. Then I couldn't resist this gorgeous Great Pyrenees dog.

The hounds are brother and sister and are a little over a year old. I took the boy out for a stroll and it turned into him taking me for a pull. This boy would not be a great dog for a frail person if you were planning to walk him much. He is very friendly and affectionate with a nose to the ground doing his hound thing. He isn't much for being pinned up either so possibly a great farm dog.

The sweet little German Shepherd mix is already spayed and looks like she would be a great couch buddy.

Look at this gorgeous, fluffy dog! He is approximately one year old. He is a Great Pyrenees mix. I believe the Texarkana Humane Society has pulled him so he will be available for adoption through their group.

It is so unfortunate that there are thousands of dogs and cats that are euthanized every year in our local shelter when there are so many dogs that would make fabulous pets. Please help us make a difference by spreading the word. Share this post on your Facebook page and Tweet about it, too.

The shelter's adoption fees range from $40 to $144, depending on the gender and size of the animal or whether they have been spayed or neutered yet. You can also have your pet micro-chipped for only $20 right at the shelter! That way if your pet is ever lost, he can be returned to you quickly.

If you would like to foster a dog contact the shelter to get information about dog rescues in our area that can help.

The Animal Care and Adoption Center is located at 203 Harrison St., Texarkana, Ark. 71854 and is open Monday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
