The “Battle at Gilmer” lived up to its billing, as the Hawks downed the Buckeyes 41-38 in a thriller this past Friday night.

The Hawks did something that previous conference foes could not do in the last 17 years, give Gilmer a home loss. It wasn’t easy but no one expected it to be.

Head PG Football Coach Josh Gibson is extremely proud of the program and where it’s at, “Our players and coaches are bought in and we have created a lot of belief the past 3.5 years. They deserve this win and the success that we’ve obtained so far.”

The Hawks dominated on the ground churning out well over 400 yards rushing led by Chauncey Martin, T.J. Cole, and Bruce Garrett. PG is averaging over 45 points a game and it shows just how well all 11 players on offense are performing. Gibson says, “Our offensive line is dominating the line of scrimmage. They are taking steps every week. When you have a great OL and put talented RB’s behind them, you are going to have success.”

Through the air if was another efficient night for Quarterback Ben Harmon. The game winner came on a pass from Harmon to Wide Receiver Carson Cox. Gibson tells us just how they came up with the game winning play. “Coach Fincher saw that their defense was rotating down to stop Chauncey on the sweep play. The middle of the field was open. He suggested a pass to Carson off of the play-action sweep to Chauncey. It worked perfectly.”

Defensively the Hawks held the explosive Gilmer offense to their second lowest point total of the year. Gibson was proud that the defense continued to fight all night and made some  big plays. “We made plays when we had to make them to give us an opportunity to win.”

Next up is the Atlanta Rabbits. The Rabbits are always dangerous because of their speed, Gibson says, “They are one of the fastest teams in the state every year(see state track results).” Gibson says they are a spread team with a very fast running back.

Defensively, they always play hard, and believes the Hawks will need to continue to dominate the line of scrimmage and play physical to win the game.

Giibson does not want anyone to get satisfied, he wants all aspects of the team to improve each week, to continue focusing on their weaknesses and continue to push themselves. He says, “We will get better.”

Gibson continues to be thankful for the community support. he says the district has awesome parents and community members who cotinue to show up and pack stadiums for all of our extra-curricular groups. He says, Friday nights are special in “The Grove,”

It’s homecoming week, a way to show your support for the football team and sports and extra-curricular activities in general is to come out to the Homecoming parade this evening (Monday) which starts at 6:30 at the Cross Point Church on McKnight Road and continues to the circle at the high school.

Following the parade, there will be a pep rally at the football stadium, which will include Cheerleaders, Show Stoppers, the Band, Football Players and the Homecoming Court.

Each week brings new excitement to PG, get out and support these young men, they are putting it all on the line. It just keeps getting better and better.
