Adopt Shep from the Texarkana animal shelter. He is approximately 6 months old and a shepherd mix that was surrendered by his owner with his brother. But his brother had to be put down. So sad. He was a great dog too but let's focus on getting Shep adopted into a great home.

This lanky puppy is currently 50 pounds and will continue to grow for the next year and a half. His tail is long and so are his legs. Shep was shy at first but quickly came around and was ready to play and get affection. He didn't do well on the leash going out but going back in was much better which shows how quickly this boy can learn new things.

Shep looks to have flea dermatitis which means he is very allergic to fleas. A simple month prevention will fix that issue and his hair will grow back in and let's face it, all of our pets need to be on flea prevention as well as heartworm prevention.

Dogs and cats are euthanized every week in our local shelter. Some weeks there are more animals put down than other weeks. Room quickly becomes an issue at shelters like ours because it is an open admission facility which means they take everything and cannot turn down animals. It is up to the community to prevent it. Spay and neuter your pets. Volunteer to help educate citizens about the need to fix their animals. Share this post on your Facebook page and Tweet about it, too.

The shelter's adoption fees range from $40 to $144, depending on the gender and size of the animal or whether they have been spayed or neutered yet. You can also have your pet microchipped for only $20 at the shelter. That way if your pet is ever lost, he or she can be returned to you quickly.

The Animal Care and Adoption Center is located at 203 Harrison St., Texarkana, Ark., 71854 and is open Monday through Friday from 11AM and 5PM and Saturdays from 11AM to 2PM. Our shelter takes in animals from many surrounding communities. Please remember to check with the shelter if you have lost a pet or if you are interested in adopting a new pet.
