Tripp is a 10 month old American Bulldog mix. He is house trained, great on a leash and very friendly to people.

Tripp met the shelter's office cat and didn't want to bother her as she laid in the office chair. He could probably tell that she doesn't care for dogs much. He was within a foot of her and looked away when she gave him the look.

He was picked up as a stray and never reclaimed. He has been at the shelter since August 18 so his time at the shelter could be cause for him landing on the euth list soon as space is quickly becoming an issue according to the shelter director.

Tripp looks like he is mixed with some sort of bird dog and possibly Labrador.

Tripp has a microchip already that was put in at the Humane Society of Northeast Texas which is in Longview, Texas. He supposedly passed through a rescue in that area and was adopted but the trail goes cold from there so now he is on the adoption floor looking for a new home.

Tripp takes treats so easily. I even stuck my fingers in his mouth and he wouldn't bite down. He will sit for treats too. Tripp weighs 60 pounds and needs to gain a few pounds.

A good home for Tripp would be one that has a fenced yard. He doesn't appear to be a climber or a digger so he should stay inside a fence easily. Since he is house trained, he would be great as an inside dog with a family with kids or even a single person that wants to spend time with a pet. Tripp doesn't seem to care for fetching so you'll need to go for walks or just spend time outside with him to get his energy out. He appears to be a low to medium energy dog.

His vaccinations for parvo, distemper and kennel cough have all been done at the shelter. He needs a rabies shot and to be neutered as well as started on heartworm prevention. Tripp is still young enough that he does not hike his leg which is a good thing for plants and outdoor equipment or furniture. When he is neutered, he will probably never start hiking his leg.

The fee to adopt this boy, after all of the vetting which also includes a microchip, will cost $152 which is a discounted rate. If you were to take your own dog to the vet for neuter, rabies, kennel cough and distemper/parvo vaccinations and a microchip, it would cost over $200.

Dogs and cats are euthanized every week in our local shelter. Some weeks there are more animals put down than other weeks. At this moment there are open kennels on the adoption floor but by the end of the week, that could quickly change. Space becomes an issue at shelters like ours because it is an open admission facility which means they take everything and cannot turn down animals. It is up to the community to help our local shelter and there are several ways to help:

  • Please spay and neuter your pets.
  • Volunteer to help educate citizens about the need to fix their animals.
  • Share this post on your Facebook page and Tweet about it, too.
  • Go to the shelter and take your own photos and videos to share with friends.
  • Donate money to the shelter to help cover spay and neuter costs for people that want to adopt a pet but they cannot afford all of the upfront costs.
The shelter's adoption fees range from $40 to $201, depending on the gender and size of the animal or whether they have been spayed or neutered yet.
Have your current pets microchipped at the animal shelter for only $20. That way if your pet is ever lost, he or she can be returned to you quickly.

The Animal Care and Adoption Center is located at 203 Harrison St., Texarkana, Ark., 71854 and is open Monday through Friday from 11AM and 5PM and Saturdays from 11AM to 2PM. Our shelter takes in animals from many surrounding communities. Please remember to check with the shelter if you have lost a pet or if you are interested in adopting a new pet.
