Netflix Goes Sci-Fi ‘Groundhog Day’ in the First Trailer for ‘Arq’

I’m sure there’s a point at which movies like Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow will lose their appeal to me, but that day is not today. A story that centers on a character forced relive a certain period of time  —  to repeat his or her actions until they get them just right  —  might be seeing an uptick in popularity due to video games, but how many times have wanted to have a moment of our day back so we could do it again? So this first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming film Arq pushes all the right buttons for me as both a fan of science-fiction and a fan of, you know, obsessing over moments of my life.

In the trailer, a young couple fights their way through a futuristic home invasion before being forced to endlessly wake up and do it all over again. The film was written and directed by Tony Elliott, who cut his teeth as writer on shows like Orphan Black and the SyFy channel series Hunters, which I assume means he knows a thing or two about convoluted plots and fun science-fiction. If this is anywhere as good as the 2014 independent film Time Lapse  —  another smallish time travel movie on Netflix  —  then Netflix will have proven it knows exactly what type of independent science-fiction movies to target.

While the Netflix YouTube video contains a short synopsis of the film, here’s a more in-depth version from a Janurary casting announcement in The Hollywood Reporter:

ARQ is a post-apocalyptic thriller set in the near future when the oil supply has run dry. Trapped in a house and surrounded by a gang of mysterious masked intruders, an engineer must protect a technology that could deliver unlimited energy and end the wars that have consumed the world. The only problem is that the technology has created a time loop that condemns him and his friends all to relive the same day over and over.

Arq stars Robbie Amell and Rachael Taylor and will be available on Netflix on September 16.
