Detention Deputies with the Miller County Sheriff’s Office prevented a tragedy by saving an inmate’s life recently.

According to the Sheriff's Office, on October 31 at approximately 5:15PM,  Sergeant Alan Sanders was conducting a security check.  During the check Sergeant Sanders located a male inmate hanging in his cell by a bed sheet.  The inmate was turning blue from the lack of air.

The detention center emergency protocol was immediately initiated.  Corporal Don Rodgers, Corporal Richard Henderson, and LVN Chelsea Foster responded and assisted in rescuing and treating the inmate.  The inmate was safely cut free from the bed sheet and given first aid.  The inmate received a burn around his throat area from hanging.

The inmate was placed in the detention centers emergency mental health program.  He has received extensive professional mental health assistance.  After returning from the state hospital in Malvern he continues to be housed and receive mental health help within the detention center.  The name of the inmate is not being released for privacy.

Sheriff Jackie Runion presented the deputies with a certificate of appreciation for their attention to detail, and their quick and decisive actions in saving the life within the detention center.  He further commended Warden Jeffie Walker for implementing the detailed and comprehensive plan that insured this tragedy was avoided.

Sheriff Runion pointed out, not only did Warden Walker develop procedures within the facility to help ensure the safety of inmates and staff but also ensures the procedures are followed daily.
