If you have your pet microchipped there is a greater chance of having your lost pet returned to you. It is an easy thing to do. Ask your vet to microchip your pet or you can even get it done at our local animal shelter. My story tells the tail of two dogs that I picked up on the same day: one had a microchip and the other did not.

It was a day of finding dogs everywhere. I was thinking I needed to put blinders on so I could get where I needed to go without adding dog passengers along the way.

This beautiful girl was dancing around on the side of Hwy 67. The only reason I picked her up was to keep her from being hit by a car. She appeared to be well cared for and someone's pet. She didn't smell bad, she wasn't skinny, she didn't have any fleas...all signs pointed to a dog that somehow escaped from her yard. She did not have a microchip though so I couldn't contact the owner. I posted her on Facebook and hoped the owners would see it and call me. Eventually they did.

Later that day, as I was headed home and I came across another dog that was running next to the road in danger of being hit by a car. It was raining and this dog DID NOT smell good. She wreaked! It was a smaller dog and had been running in the tall grass so she was a mess. She had a microchip so I was able to immediately contact the owners.

Ask your vet to microchip your pet today! Most people do not carry microchip scanners in the car like I do but the animal control officers do. Often people that pick up strays take them to a vet clinic to have them scanned for microchips. Collars can fall off but microchips won't.
