Lorde Says, “I’ll Never Go Off the Rails Like Britney”
Like Britney Spears before her, Lorde is a teenage singer who's achieved amazing worldwide fame, but she vows that she won't suffer the kind of public meltdown that Britney went through a few years ago, nor die young of substance abuse, as Amy Winehouse did.
The New Zealand star, born Ella Yelich-O’Connor, insists, "I’m never going to change or let fame get the better of me. I’ll never go off the rails like Britney or do an Amy because my upbringing was so normal. I can’t touch alcohol at my age and I’m not sure I even want to when I’m older. Going to crazy places like L.A. makes me appreciate the lifestyle I have in New Zealand even more."
"I don’t think I could ever live in L.A. It does something to your soul," she adds. "The place really infects people if I stay there for too long I start being a freak."
Lorde also says that controversial Miley Cyrus-like antics also are not for her, but she doesn't judge Miley for her actions.
"It’s something I’d never do I wouldn’t feel confident with my a** out," she says. "But if Miley feels comfortable doing it herself then it’s no one’s business to judge. If she wants to appear in her bra and panties then it’s cool. Having been in an institution like Disney all her life, it’s important she has fun. For now, it’s not for me. It’s not natural.”
But despite her seeming self-confidence, Lorde says that at heart, she's just like any other insecure teenage girl. "When I meet a bunch of girls my age, I find that stressful, as I’m just a high school student myself. I feel intimidated by them," she admits. But leaving school to be a music star full-time isn't something she wants, either.
“I’m missing school right now, which is hard as I love school," she tells The Sun. "I’m not missing out on anything. When I get home my friends are there for me straight away and everything is back to normal. I may be Lorde on stage or on TV but back home, I’m just Ella."
Lorde turns 17 on Thursday.
