We're sure Justin Bieber meant well, but he's been the subject of ridicule since touring the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam this weekend and writing a guestbook entry there that many have deemed insensitive.

“Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber,” Justin wrote, according to the museum’s Facebook page.

The comment has drawn criticism and derision from many people on the Facebook page, with one person writing, "She would've been a WHAT? That little idiot is way too full of himself. She's an important historical figure so show some respect."

A person close to the singer said that Justin spent more than an hour touring the museum and learning about Frank, who was fond of pop culture and hung pictures of celebrities on her bedroom walls.

Annemarie Bekker, a spokeswoman for the Anne Frank House, says the pop star is “a fan of Anne and maybe Anne would have been a fan of his.”

“We think he meant it well. He’s only 19 years old and living in a crazy world...with all girls being fans of him worldwide. Maybe that is also why he wrote it down,” she says of Justin’s guestbook entry.

Justin was in the Netherlands for a Saturday-night concert in Arnhem.

In 1942, when she was 13, Frank went into hiding with her family after the Nazi occupiers of the Netherlands issued an order for Frank's sister Margot to be arrested and sent to a concentration camp. Her family was later captured, and Frank died in a concentration camp of disease and exhaustion.
