Re-starting with only six laps left to go in the 55th running of the Daytona 500, Jimmie Johnson sped away for the victory in NASCAR’S Great American Race at Daytona International Speedway.
This is Johnson’s 61st career victory and his 400th Sprint Cup Series start. This victory in the NASCAR season opener is his second time to win NASCAR’s most prestigious race.
It was Johnson getting the win, followed by Dale Earnheardt Jr. in second, Mark Martin third, followed by 2012 champion Brad Keselowski in fourth and Ryan Newman rounding out the Top 5.
Danica Patrick made the record books on a number of instances this week. First female driver to qualify to start from the pole position in Daytona, and by finishing in 8th place she now holds the record for the highest finish in the Daytona 500, and when she paced the field on laps 90 and 91 she became the first female driver to lead a lap in the Daytona 500. With those 2 laps she also set a record as the first female driver to lead a lap in a cup series race.
Next up, it’s the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Speedway. Television coverage will be on Fox and begin at 2:00 p.m. (CST). It was at this race last year when Jeff Gordon wrecked Clint Bowyer on purpose setting off a firestorm.
