There is an important distinction to make between being alone and being lonely, January Jones says in the new issue of Red — especially when it comes to motherhood.

Jones, mother to five-year-old Xander, tells the magazine it's not a concern whether she finds someone with whom she an co-parent her son. She is perfectly content handling child-rearing solo.

"I just don’t feel I need a partner,” she explains. “Do I want one? Maybe. But I don’t feel unhappy or lonely. It would have to be someone amazing that I would want to make room. Someone who would contribute to my happiness and not take away from it."

Further, she adds the notion that every boy needs a masculine role model is antiquated, and says her son might actually wind up more compassionate and measured without one.

“It’s good to have strong women around a man,” she said. “To teach him to respect women. He doesn’t have a male person in his life saying ‘don’t cry’ or ‘you throw like a girl’. All those s----y things dads accidentally do."

Still, in the event Jones finds herself on the market, she has a particular type in mind.

"I want a manly man in flannel, with a beard and an axe. But then there’s always something wrong with him. Like he’s a Republican," she notes.
