The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) will hold a hearing this Monday evening in Hope to accept public comments for a draft water permit for the John W. Turk Jr. Power Plant.

Swepco has applied ofr a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systme permit for the proposed discharge of the water used for the cooling process combined with other low volume waste streams. The proposed discharge is into the Little River, which is a tributary to the Red River. The public meeting and hearing will begin at 6 pm at the Rapert Library Auditorium at the University of Arkansas Community College located at 2500 South Main in Hope.

The Texarkana, Texas Police Department says one person is dead and another jailed after a stabbing incident over the weekend. Officers were called to the 600 block of Waterman Street and found the victim, 54 year old Beverly Joyce Chatman suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest. She was transported to Wadley Regional Medical Center where she later died.

Officers located and arrested the suspect, 34 year old Eric Martin of Texarkana, Texas who has been booked into the Bi-State Detention Center on murder charges. No bail has been set.

Oil prices continue to fall. The price of a barrel of oil was hovering around $90 a barrel today in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices have fallen from $115 a barrel back in early May.
