Homecoming Week is a special time at Pleasant Grove.

It's a fun time for all Hawk fans. On Monday, the community rallied for the parade and presentation of the Homecoming Court. Thursday is the pep rally at the middle school and Friday at the high school.

Friday night the Homecoming Queen Court Presentation will begin at 7PM, with the kickoff at 7:30. The high school Homecoming Dance will be Saturday night.

Before we look at the Hawks football game, let's look back at last weeks game against Gladewater. As everyone knows the PG winning streak was broken at 19 by the Bears.

It was however, honestly more a matter of the Hawks making too many mistakes and giving the victory away. Hawks Head Coach Josh Gibson put it this way," We fumbled the ball 6 times and gave up a safety. 16 points they scored when our defense wasn't on the field. We never punted one time in the game, but we stopped ourselves and have to do a better job of protecting the ball."

Two of those fumbles were returned for a touchdown including the last one with under a minute to go in the game.

Despite the disappointment of that, there were plenty of things the Hawks did right. Gibson says the Hawks out gained the Bears 455 to 325 yards, had 7 defensive stops, created turnovers, had a ton of rushing yards, and played very well on special teams.

In fact James Wiggins and Bruce Garrett once again were piling up big yardage on the ground for PG.

Defensively, Gibson says Outside Linebacker, Nick Martin, is playing really good right now, getting better each week, and will be a special player for the team.

Dillon Williams continues to just keep getting stronger and better, Gibson trusts his kicker, " Dillon Williams is a game changer in the kicking game. He's been perfect on 5 long attempts this year. He is extremely confident and accurate. We have a lot of belief in Dillon Williams.'

As for this week's opponent, Tyler Chapel Hill, he describes them as athletic with a great football history. Tyler is coming off a big win last week. Gibson says they run a spread system, and have a few game breakers on that side of the ball. This includes a Wide Receiver that has at least 14 collegiate offers.

Coming off the first loss in the program since 2016, I asked Gibson how that and the distractions of Homecoming Week have affected the kids. He said, "Our kids have handled the Homecoming Week really well. We will be ready to play Friday night."

Gibson is expecting the atmosphere at Hawk Stadium to be once again charged Friday night. "There is no doubt that we will have another sell-out crowd for this game. Homecoming Week is a special time where we get to honor our past graduates and give them a reason to be proud of PG. It's definitely on of my favorite weeks of the year."

Hawk fans should take time to appreciate what the team last year and the holdovers from that squad accomplished. First and foremost a State Football Championship in Texas, which is a huge accomplishment. Not only that, but to do it in such a convincing way, the perfect season of 16-0, and honestly dominating a West Orange Stark team that was coming in as the two time defending champs and a 40 game winning streak.

Then to carry it over with 3 straight wins to begin this year. WE ARE ALL SO EXTREMELY PROUD OF THIS GROUP, COACH GIBSON, HIS STAFF, AND ALL THE PLAYERS FROM LAST YEAR  AND THIS YEARS TEAM. Besides being great competitors on the field, they are even better citizens of the community off the field.

They won 19 straight with grace and sportsmanship and lost 1 game last week with that same grace and sportsmanship. It starts at the top and filters down through the whole group.

Hawks Pride, Homecoming, and Victory, it goes hand in hand.
